This past September, Thailand — long a preferred destination for LGBTQ+ travel — celebrated the passing of a landmark marriage equality bill, set to take effect in January 2025.
Since 2013, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) New York has been an ally to gay travelers via its Go Thai Be Free initiative, comprising an online portal, a social community and a team dedicated to the needs of LGBTQ+ visitors to Thailand.
On the heels of its marriage equality bill, the country expects to further boost its reputation as an inclusive and welcoming destination. We sat down with Chompu Marusachot, director of the TAT New York Office, to learn more.
Do you expect the new marriage equality bill to boost LGBTQ+ tourism to Thailand?
Thailand is known for being a popular destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, offering a welcoming environment and a supportive community. The new marriage equality bill will undoubtedly generate increased awareness and interest in tourism to “The Land of Smiles,” and further strengthen its reputation as a leading inclusive travel destination that continues to attract countless visitors from around the world year after year.
What does LGBTQ+ tourism currently look like in Thailand, and how does it have the potential to grow?
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Thailand has an income from tourism from this group of approximately 230 billion baht [about $6,696,851,028], the highest in Asia and the fourth in the world. Under the mission of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the TAT has set a goal for Thailand to be one of the top LGBTQ-friendly destinations in the world. The LGBTQ+ market is considered a group with high economic potential and another driving force that will help stimulate the country's economy.
Survey results show that LGBTQ+ tourists have a market value of up to 6.64 trillion baht and have 40% higher purchasing power than general tourists. It is estimated that there will be approximately 180 million travelers in this group by 2030.
In addition, there is a goal to push Thailand to become a “Pride Friendly Destination” and [for Bangkok to host WorldPride] in 2030 to make Thailand the world's No. 1 destination for the LGBTQ+ group worldwide. We see the importance of the “Rainbow Economy,” a group with high purchasing power and financial potential.

For those who don’t already know, what are some of the ways Thailand facilitates an LGBTQ-friendly vacation?
Thailand makes it easy for LGBTQ+ travelers to enjoy their vacation with welcoming hotels, restaurants and activities. Major cities such as Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya offer LGBTQ-friendly venues, and the country's laws support LGBTQ+ rights. Visitors can enjoy everything from cultural tours to relaxing at welcoming beaches, all within a safe and comfortable environment.
