In a pioneering move to address the growing need for skilled and educated workers in the hospitality industry, New York University (NYU) has launched a hospitality apprenticeship program that offers both career training and academic coursework.
NYU’s Tisch Center of Hospitality is one of the few institutions offering an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in hospitality management through an apprenticeship model. The program’s approach to education addresses the real-time labor shortages in the hospitality sector and provides students with a blend of academic rigor and practical experience.
Approved by the state of New York in December of 2024, the degree program is designed to open doors to career opportunities, provide a structured pathway for success in the hospitality sector and reshape perceptions of the industry.

"You can now redeem those hospitality entry-level positions for academic credit at one of the most prestigious hospitality schools in the country,” said Brian Barker, clinical associate professor at NYU.
NYU is also in the process of finalizing a partnership with the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) and Careerwise; the goal of the partnership is to bridge the gap between academia and industry by providing diverse talent with paid learning opportunities, industry-specific training and real-world job placements. Careerwise operates a portal across 60 high schools in New York City, giving students the opportunity to apply for apprenticeships with top companies. Additionally, the NYU's partnership with AHLA will allow students to access training via more than 2,000 apprentices nationwide across 80 affiliated properties.
Backed by the Marriott Foundation, the program benefits from financial and institutional support, ensuring long-term sustainability. Marriott’s global leadership in the hospitality industry gives apprentices access to an extensive network and opportunities for career advancement.
What Does NYU’s New Program Offer?
NYU’s apprenticeship program includes four specialized tracks, each focused on different aspects of the hospitality field.
The first track, dubbed “Front Desk,” focuses on customer service skills. Students will practice handling guest inquiries, managing reservations and check-ins and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere at the front desk. The “Revenue Management” track aims for apprentices to learn about data management and strategic planning. They will also study how to optimize profitability by applying effective revenue strategies. The third track, “Sales and Events,” will help students gain expertise in event planning and coordination while also developing sales strategies to attract clients and boost revenue. Finally, apprentices in the “Human Resources and Purchasing” track will receive training in human resources management and procurement, focusing on efficient recruitment, staff development, retention and supplier relationship management.
Other Benefits of NYU’s Hospitality Program
No matter the track they take, students in the program have access to paid learning opportunities, which provide income as well as valuable work experience. The hands-on experience is designed to enhance resumes and career readiness, while also making education more affordable through tuition discounts. Apprentices can receive up to 30% off their Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree at NYU, allowing them to concentrate on their studies without the financial burden of traditional tuition costs.
Graduates of the program will gain career connections and industry exposure, setting them on a path to long-term success in the workforce. Upon completion of the program, apprentices also have the opportunity to continue their education through automatic placement into NYU’s highly competitive bachelor’s programs.
The NYU Hospitality Apprenticeship Program is set to officially begin in January 2026 with its first cohort. Applications are now open.

For industry partners, NYU’s program offers a chance to develop a sustainable talent pipeline, fostering long-term relationships with the next generation of hospitality professionals. Apprentices will leave the program with the skills and training necessary to drive innovation and growth, ensuring a future-ready workforce for the hospitality sector. In addition, companies involved in the program will have the opportunity to mentor young professionals, aiming to shape the future of the industry.
"Industry leaders get to be part of the story that’s changing the misconceptions of hospitality,” said Barker.
