Pitchup.com, a global outdoor accommodation booking platform, has launched an initiative to improve accessibility in the outdoor travel sector. The company partnered with Purple Goat, a disability-led inclusive marketing agency, to conduct a survey identifying challenges faced by individuals with neurodivergence, chronic illness and physical disabilities when seeking outdoor accommodations.

Key findings from the survey of more than 2,000 respondents include:

1. 83% reported that accessibility issues significantly factor into their decision to avoid outdoor travel.

2. Those who haven't gone on an outdoor vacation are 174% more likely to perceive them as inaccessible compared to those who have.

3. 95% stated that more information about accessibility would make them consider an outdoor holiday.

4. Accessible bathroom facilities were considered the most crucial filter (51%) for accommodations research, followed by entrance and exit details (48%).

5. Steps, ramps, and wheelchair accessibility were identified as the most common challenges.

In response to these findings, Pitchup.com has implemented new website features to help travelers with disabilities book suitable accommodations. New accessibility filters allow guests to view detailed information about site features, including well-lit paths, accessible parking, and wheelchair-accessible bathrooms. Site managers can also upload photos to provide visual confirmation of these features.

The company is developing resources to support business accessibility, including a guide for site managers with case studies and tips from industry leaders. Pitchup.com is also creating guides to accessible attractions in popular destinations.

Dan Yates, founder and managing director of Pitchup.com, stated that the initiative aims to inspire the outdoor travel industry to make necessary changes to ensure nature experiences are accessible to all travelers.
