The Caribbean is a rewarding destination for foodies — especially in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which is home to one of the region’s most diverse and sophisticated culinary scenes.

Visitors can find lots of ways to delight their taste buds in the island’s capital. A good way to start is by sampling authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, which is a flavorful fusion of indigenous Taino, African and Spanish influences. Staples such as rice, beans, plantains and yuca (cassava) play a large role in the Puerto Rican kitchen, while lechon (roasted suckling pig) and bacalaitos (codfish fritters) are just a couple examples of popular protein sources.

I can personally vouch for the irresistible qualities of Puerto Rican food; my husband is from Puerto Rico, and every time we visit, I can’t get enough of it — especially mofongo, a mouthwatering mashed plantain dish that’s usually topped with some kind of meat or seafood.

Even if you’re looking for something from elsewhere, San Juan is ready with tempting creations prepared with influences from around the world. Here are a few of the best places to dine in the city.

Great Hotel Restaurants in San Juan

Many of San Juan’s hoteliers have a reputation for offering memorable culinary experiences, often with stunning views. The Royal Sonesta San Juan, for example, is home to Karaya, which is billed as a bar but is also a great place to sample local dishes in a scenic, open-air space graced with fire pits and pool views. Gingambo, at San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, is another recommended choice for sampling local cuisine with international flair, with options such as Taino pumpkin cream and fried whole snapper.

Another celebrated luxury property is Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts. Its signature restaurant, 1919, is an especially elegant venue headed by executive chef Juan Jose Cuevas, who specializes in upscale Italian cuisine and other dishes.

Nearby, O:Live Boutique Hotel, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, is home to two well-regarded venues, both headed by chef Mario Pagan. Sage is a self-described “Italian steak loft” that serves — you guessed it — steak and Italian dishes, among other offerings, amid a stylish rustic-hip ambience. It’s complemented by The Rooftop, a bar offering beautiful views of the Condado Lagoon over light bites.

For a beachfront vibe, consider The Tryst, a boutique hotel in Condado, where Wicked Lily serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with inspiring beach vistas. Shrimp guacamole and pork belly bao buns are among the more interesting choices, and the menu is more extensive on weekends, where the weekend drag brunch has become a go-to for locals and visitors in search of a meal with a lively show.

One of the city’s newest hotel culinary offerings is at Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino, which recently opened Choices, a Mexican street food kitchen and tequila bar that’s an ideal place to satisfy cravings for tasty Mexican food.

Best Places to Eat in Old San Juan and Beyond

The San Juan metropolitan area is dotted with noteworthy restaurants in multiple neighborhoods. Old San Juan, the most historic area, is a great place to start any culinary exploration. Marmalade Restaurant & Wine Bar has long been one of the most celebrated restaurants there thanks to its unique format: It only serves tasting menus consisting of five courses (for groups of fewer than six guests) or 14 courses (for groups of six or more). Items range from fluke sashimi to grilled ahi tuna and hormone-free beef tenderloin.

Travelers can satisfy their sweet tooth at nearby Chocobar Cortes, where chocolate is the favored ingredient. It’s featured in everything from hot chocolate and a chocolate old-fashioned cocktail to a choco-chicken sandwich, which is made with a grilled chicken breast marinated in chili and cocoa and served on sourdough bread with gouda cheese.

Calle Loiza, located near Condado, is another popular neighborhood, especially for trendsetting restaurants. Top choices include Sabrina Brunch & Bistro Bar, which serves standards such as rib eye, Berkshire pork chops and hanger steak amid a hip ambience that sometimes includes live music and dancing. Also worth a visit are El Viejo Almacen — which specializes in Argentinian cuisine with Italian influences — and Cafe Tresbe, an open-air eatery set partly in giant containers, where the hearty menu includes pulled-pork sandwiches, tacos and sliders.

In the vibrant La Placita de Santurce, an area of Santurce known for authentic casual eateries and vibrant nightlife, Santaella is a standout. Its menu combines contemporary Puerto Rican cuisine with international influences for dishes such as caramelized braised pork shank served with potato salad.

Just a few blocks away in Santurce is Lote 23, a trendy “gastronomic park” with kiosks that sell everything from deep-dish pizza and Mexican street food to contemporary Caribbean specialties.

The beachfront neighborhood of Condado is yet another hub for foodie exploration. One of the top upscale options is Mario Pagan, where the eponymous chef oversees a menu that includes fresh seafood, yuca fries, pegaito rice and lump crab tacos. Wine lovers, meanwhile, may want to head to Bodegas Compostela, which has an extensive wine list from Spain, France, Italy, the U.S., Argentina and Austria.
