United Airlines is set to transform Washington Dulles International Airport with a major infrastructure project valued at more than half a billion dollars. The airline announced plans for a new 435,000-square-foot Concourse E, featuring 14 dedicated gates, scheduled to debut in late 2026.

The expansion includes a 40,000-square-foot United Club, which will increase the airline's club space at the airport by 70%. Construction is currently underway, made possible through collaboration with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) and support from local and federal funding, including grants from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

United, currently the largest airline in the D.C. region, has significantly expanded its operations at Dulles. The carrier now operates 25% more flights compared to 2023 and has launched 13 new domestic routes this year — more than any other U.S. carrier at a single airport, according to United.

The airline's growth strategy includes nearly 280 daily flights projected by April 2025, with new international destinations on the horizon. Upcoming routes include inaugural nonstop services to Dakar, Senegal, and summer flights to Nice, France, and Venice, Italy.

As part of its regional commitment, United will also open a new 20,000-square-foot flight attendant training center near Dulles Airport in 2025. The company currently employs more than 8,000 people in the Washington, D.C. area and plans to hire an additional 700 local employees in 2024.

"Washington Dulles has emerged as a global gateway and these new investments will help deliver the world-class facility that our employees and customers deserve," said Scott Kirby, CEO of United.

The project aligns with United's broader United Next plan, which has already seen the airline invest more than $32 billion across its business since 2021. The Dulles expansion follows similar infrastructure investments in airports in Denver, Houston and Newark.

Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner both expressed support for the project, highlighting its potential economic benefits and improved travel infrastructure for the region.

The new concourse will feature direct access to the airport's Aerotrain station, expansive gate seating and additional concessions and retail spaces, further enhancing the passenger experience.
